The New Cure: Stay Single

Editorial Design | 2-Spread Feature

The idea for these spreads came from observing and conversing with older women in my life and noticing how many of them would do significantly more emotional and physical labor than their male counterparts. That train of thought led me to a NYT article by Catherine Pearson, “Over 60, Single and Never Happier." The article discusses how singles over 60 often go on to build fulfilling lives centered around friendships, independence, and personal freedom.

To reflect that message visually, I used a photograph by Stevie Chris titled “Bad Nun.” The image represents a clash of societal expectations — a nun, traditionally seen as a symbol of purity and restraint, confronting the viewer with grills, tattoos, and a bullet chain. I layered ransom-style magazine lettering over the image for the title treatment and wrapped it all together with a gold picture frame.

Throughout the rest of the spreads, I incorporated playful, feminine, and whimsical imagery. Elements like winding plants, flowers, and flying creatures were intentionally placed to create a youthful, liberated feeling that supported the article’s themes of freedom, individuality, and joy.
